My girlfriend just told me that her 97 chevy malibu is making some kind of "rattling" from the front of the car and is getting louder. I listend to it and it definetly a bad low end knock. I think its the #1 piston. The thing that sucks is that she still owes on the car. I tried to find a rebuild kit for it online but am having some trouble. Im a ford man so I dont know alot about chevys.
I know chevy used the 3.1 v6 in quite a few cars. Do you guys know if they are all the same or is there a certian year i have to use. Im thinking it will be easier to swap one cause i dont have the time to build a motor right now. The other thing that sucks is she is broke and I am paying for it. Oh well, that is just how it goes sometimes. Any info is appreciated!!!

I don't know about the chevy v6 but if the thing can be rebuilt from the bottom while the motor is still in the car, it might be better to let a shop just "do it". It might also be a candidate for a rebuilt exchange engine. In the end, depending on the situation, you might offer to split the cost with her, and just have a shop do the deed if you don't have the tools or situation to enable you to do it. good luck, Mr. P

low milage used motors can be the best nobody seals a motor as good as the factory. in most cases . can cost a lot less than a rebuilt motor . and just doing the bottom end is usualy just a bandade.

How many miles are on that engine? Ive seen the timing chain tensioners go to shit in those GM V6s and make some horible noises.
