I need some help with a car I bought. I'm restoring a 62 Impala Hardtop with a 327 at my shop right now. The car was supposed to be a rust free Georgia car, but after stripping the body, we found some rust in the drivers door. I usually head down to South Carolina to pick up parts every few months, but I didnt have time to make it down there to pick up anything decent. I came across an old fellow who had a bunch of old chevys in his yard up here in Wisconsin. For the measly sum of $200, I got a parts car that had a good door. According to the old timer, the car is a SS 409 car. I know the car has the SS trim on the outside and has all the SS trim on the dash.

My question is, how do I tell if this is a genuine SS or even a 409 car? The motor and trans are gone but I have most of the body. Is there a way to decipher the VIN to find out or is there a code somewhere that tells what it is? One of the guys at the shop is looking to cut the body up, but I want to make sure it isn't an actual 409 SS car before he does.

Thanks,

Mike

'can't help you with the 409 VIN identification, but I have lots of info on the motor, itself.
