You just fire it on occasion, even with blanks, just to keep the neighborhood in line.

Many years ago on the 4th of July, I attended an event at a residence in Nashville, on a hilltop overlooking the governors mansion. The guy was a gun dealer. He had a civil war cannon in the front yard. So we primed the thing and stuffed a lot of newspaper down the barrel. Then he came out in a Confederate Uniform, tossed down a shot of Jack Daniels, held his (real Civil War) sword in the air, and yelled "fire".

They lit the cannon, the fuse sputtered, and then (at night) there was this huge concussion and a blue and orange fireball headed down through the trees right at the governors mansion, ha ha ha. The next day the TBI came out and made him point it in another direction. Apparently the governor didn't think it was too funny. Had there been a cannon ball in there, ha ha, no telling what kind of damage it could have done.
