Aquariums: Salt water - Fresh water

The topic of a small beginner fresh water aquarium came up on another forum but it got me thinking. It doesn't have to be small, i will more then likely just get it a piece or two at the time until I have everything.

Some of the most (naturally) colorful fish I have seen have been in salt water, which has me thinking more along the lines of a salt water aquarium.

- what size tank do you recommend
- what steps should be taken for setup
- this is probably the main question, what tank/size filter/pump setup will take the least amount of attention (salt or fresh water)

any tips would be appreciated.

Oh also my daughter would like Nemo hence another reason for me leaning to the salt water aquarium.

salt water tanks are a pain in the ars.......

Salt water tanks need to be a minimum of 55 gal. with an external sump. The fish are alot more expencive than fresh water fish and you will loose a bunch of them in the first couple of months until you get the PH right, and the coral starts growing. So plan to buy plenty of clown fish (Nemos) because they are probably the least expencive salt water fish. After you get is set up it takes more up keep than a fresh water tank and you cant just change the water out like fresh water so you have to have more filtration.

That being said, a salt water tank is much more impresive than fresh water fish will ever be.

It seems like I remember meeting you up at the pet store and telling you all about this a few years ago. You never did get one! :flip:

I know!!! and I was hoping that maybe things have improved so I can have this bad ass Salt water aquarium that I dont have to worry about except for feeding and occasional cleaning!!

So far it looks like am wanting to hear, "OH bro, np at all get Such and Such brand filter and pump setup and this and that and youll be good to go!!"

However, honesty is what I am needing to hear!

There isn't a perfect filter setup for salt water tanks. The best I've heard for time spent on maintaining one was 4-7 hours per week. Most I've talked to with them spent more like 7-10 hours a week (75-150 gal. tanks). I finally said screw it, got rid of my fresh water fish, cleaned the tank, and got a pair of Bearded Dragons. Water change takes 1-2 minutes...

okay okay so tell me then the same info for a fresh water tank.

Fresh water tanks are no big deal, In my experience a big tank is easier to maintain than a small one. Just make sure its filtered good, Get an under gravel filter and a side hung one as well. Once every 6 months change 25% of the water.
Agressive fish will generaly live longer than comunity fish. Just make sure they are all close to the same size so they dont kill each other

Everything requires work..there is no easy way out when owning a fish tank, whether it be salt or fresh...except if you own a Beta in a bowl.......

Or a Goldfish. Just a 25-50% water change every 3-4 weeks, some fish flakes everyday.

Well thanks for the info, I guess I'll decide what Ima do. I'll let ya know what and if I decide to get it.

I'd say stick with the two legged tuna....Might be a bit more expensive, but much more fun to be around....

Wow thats scary, but no it's not me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not loaded by any means but had expected to pay more then $35 to get started. (that was the price this guy was given on those tanks and $3 for the starter fish from that fishstore.
