on the weekdays i drive an 89 toyota celica, but today i noticed that it wouldnt start. i went through all of the normal routines make sure the battery was in good shape, checked all of the connections. then i took the starter out to autozone to have it tested, it kicked out and spun fine on the tester but once i got it back in the car its doing the same thing again. the starter gear is coming out but it will not rotate, it seems like it dosent have enough force to completely engage the flywheel. im stumped any ideas-sugestions

No clue bud, but heres a shot in the dark. Try putting the battery on charge, then when it's got a strong charge hook it up and try it again.

dead starter...
just because it spins freely on their tester, doesn't mean its producing enough torque to turn your engine over.

its time for a new starter brother....

I'd guess starter too. The starter test operator may not be fully qualified or something. The signs aren't always easy to notice, but there are some things to look for other than just seeing it spin(like watching the amp meter to see if it drops too low or rises too high).

it's the RELAY sheesh, it's a $25 part, most likely, especially if you tried everything else. I suspect the 89 Rota has a relay running the starter circuit.

I'd like to know what happened here, but I'm still thinking starter. I've seen this happen many times over the years. Besides, if the relay is bad, it would likely not move the bendix at all.
