I really wonder what the first economical and popular "alternative fuel" vehilces will run on. And how long till its feasable to have one?

In the country that put a man on the moon in the 1960's, the source of just about all computer chip and programming technology, we can (if directed or motivated) build a feasible hydrogen car in a few months.
There are several things holding us back right now. The oil cartel, including all the rich US investors who have purchased "oil futures" sure don't want to see a hydrogen car. The oil companies don't want to see one, and many of the "oil based" supporting industries see themselves going out of business if hydrogen suddenly comes on line.
As far as the technology is concerned, if we sidestep all the politico's and special interest groups that are trying to keep a hydrogen car from coming on line, it's really a piece of cake.
I guess when the price of oil gets so intolerable there's a revolution here of sorts, then we can put OPEC frigging out of business and watch the price of oil drop to $5 a barrel. I'd love to see it. Perhaps we all will in our lifetimes. I just ask "big oil" to keep gasoline around for a while, so I can do my part in burning it up with that twin 427-powered yacht. I fired that mother up last night in the marina, after it sat for a few weeks and had the water cooled cast iron mufflers dry out, the sound was awesome.
Wonder what kind of underground movement, and special aftermarket shops the hydrogen industry will spawn? I can see it now, the Ole Man showing up at a drag race in a hydrogen hot rodded Mopar Xenon SS-3200 and running nines in the quarter.
