I have an engine that i am not to sure where or what year it is? I have the numbers off of the block, but dont know how to decode them.
IF you know the here are the nombers, but if you dont do you know any good web pages that will help.

The first numbers is off of the drivers side front- 4m318 11080687
I got from that number is that it is a 318 cid

The other number is on the drivers side but on the back side of the block:
4104230-318-4

If you know what these block stampings mean- the help would be nice.
Thanks

I can't decode them but they probably don't mean anything beyond year of manufacture, VIN of the original car, and that sort of thing. Nothing worth noting for a buildup. There are a couple 318 varients, but I don't think you have an early "wide-block" or one of the later roller or magnum blocks. I'm pretty sure you'd know if you had one of them. IIRC, most of the 318 blocks were pretty much identical. And there aren't any of the symbols used to indicate the block was out of spec and had been reworked before the engine was put together.

I don't have a book to de-code that number.

On the small blocks, look on the drivers side FRONT just below the cyclinder head and it has a STAMPED number that tells you what you have.

Your number 4104230-318-4

here's what LITTLE I know

first part 41 USE to tell us about when the block was made, a 41 is a late model number

the -4 at the end is the number of times that casting has been used and changed ( or atleast it use to tell us that, might won't to check that out)

the rest of the number idunno
