Ok boys, this winters project is fix save money to fix the rear axle in the T-bird. The bird developed a bad noise related to the pinion or input bearing in the axle. The guy at the shop said it will be 360 bucks in labor and i supply parts. Because the labor is kinda high i decided i will go buy good stuff for the rebuild. I want 3.73 gears and a Eaton posi.
Does anyone know a good site to get this stuff at a good price? I also need bearings(site for that to.) I'd go to my ford dealer for bearings but they rape you on prices locally up here. So i'd like to find a online ford dealer down south to get bearings from.
Anyone have any different suggestions for the rebuild? Don't be bashful need the input?
Thanks ahead of time.

well, that time has come, in the next week or so i'll be getting the a/c charged and axle fixed. I've got a hook up for the rebuild with the eaton posi.
BUt... i'm still deciding on gear set. should i say with 3.55 or move up to 3.73 or 3.90. Ive been talking myself back into the 3.55's with how nicely the car pulls with the turbo being able to fully spool. Anyone have any suggestions

I'd use 3.73s.
I just took my Mustang for a quick spin around the block (which has 3.73s) ... From about 10mph, the IHI spools RIGHT NOW.
Too bad I can't give it a real test, yet. I really wish I could spray it. This car's gonna be a blast.
It's a bit late for a winter project, no? OH! I get it, the project was to save the money!

id run 4.10's with 28in. tires out back....you can get your diff bearings, crush collar, and pinion bearing through mustangs unlimited,.. they have a warehouse in ga. and are pretty reasonable with $$$$.good luck

Didja get the work done yet? If not, how about finding a shop that specializes in rear ends, truck trannies... heavy stuff. A place that carries all the big brands, Eaton, Federal Mogul, Euclid... those brands... Then go ask for an RA-311 bearing set. It's actually a complete rebuild kit for the Ford 8.8" rear. If you're is an 8.8... If the # is wrong, I'll have to look at the box, but I think that's it.
I too, would run 3.73's, as this is a 4 popper, and you probably dont want to trouble yourself with a tall tire. You would have the rpm for a 4.10 or maybe 4.30, even with a 26" tire, but I just don't think you need that. And for a street driver, it's a loud gearset for the slight advantage seen on raceday...

I'm guessing the 88 T-bird didn't get an 8.8, then it hits me, many people seek those rears for the disc brakes.... It must've been an 8.8, right? Had to be...

You can get the speedo gear and the ring & pinion from them. Should only cost about $170.00, plus $18 or so for the speedo gear.

I when to ford to get the speedo gear for 3.73's and it's not sold that way. I was told theres ten different color gears and what not. Has anyone swapped this gear in there ford to maybe give me a close idea of what color i need. I have 26in tires (225/60/16) with 3.55's, with T5, 3.97/2.34/1.46/1.0/0.8
I'm going to 3.73's
Its a electric speedo not manual.

Well, it's a real pain to even attempt to figure this out on the Internet (especially, when I'm not willing to attempt it ) so, try this ...

I scanned it too large (too many pixels) to make it fit here, properly and I'm too impatient to do it again. My scanner's actin' funny.
I can email a larger file, if you want it.

from that i'm guessing i'm black, and need to switch to red. Man the people at ford are such homos, they should have a program or sheet like that one to help customers.

Actually, I don't know what color you'll find on the drive gear (the one on the cable)(probably red), but the TC trannies come with green driven gear (the one on the main shaft), so I doubt your drive gear is black.
It would seem as if, you just need to swap the green driven gear for a yellow driven gear and keep the red drive gear (if it is, in fact, red).
Thank FORD for their great talent for changing their plan in mid-flight!

The people at ford don't even like to acknowledge that they made cars from 1980-1993.

Man i won't ever go there. I'll be ranting for the rest of the night.
The day SVO was shut down haulted anything perfromance from end 86-93. The efforts that team made to get out of the 70's and make cars fun again were top notch. Just to brush on what they had planned for the 2.3: If whoever was incharge of ford(forget name, also created SVT) at the time shutdown SVO when they were on the verge of producing a 4 Cyl. that in stock from would make 250-270hp. And with 2.3's you allways make more torque than hp. 16-17 years later, thats stock power 4cyl. are just seeing in the states this year with the WRX/EVO. I better stop, but maybe at the time they were thinking... could you imagine a domestic 4 cyl that would make as much if not more power then V8's of that day.
