hmm, that might not be so bad!

Posted by: BlownElCamino

Stonefox's remark needs expanation.

101 KLOL radio in Houston this weekend, after 35 years, suddenly switched formats. Gone is Rock N Roll and here to stay is Tejano Hip-Hop.

Yep, guys in sombreros with accordians and really fly rims.

Admittedly, 101 had been whimpering ever since it was assimilated by the Clear Channel cabal. It had gone from being a rock station to be the endless repeat Aerosmith and AC/DC station (and not the good stuff, either).

Speaking of Aerosmith, has anyone noticed that their best album was the one where they were all too wasted to show up at the studio to record?

Anyways, we, the 4th largest city in the union, now have only one Dinosaur Rock station and one station that plays Green Day 24/7.

Maybe we can get a derelict transmitter from someplace and relay in KISS FM from San Antonio. It is a disgrace that the 10th largest city in the U.S. has better radio than Houston.

I know they're needed elsewhere, but Bush should send some guys down from Fort Hood. Clear Channel is holding Houston hostage.

And that the absolute truth, They have bought out almost every popular station in Houston, aside from some Pop and Rap stations They buy out just about every thing they see as threat to them just to turn around and axe them.

pirate radio!

Posted by: BlownElCamino

This is Pirate Radio and We Use Our Own Ammunition...

Right now there is a tornado on the ground here. Maybe it will jog west and hit the Clear Channel building.

Speaking of stupid broadcasters, here is a real quote from the news 2 meteorological bobble-head:

"Tornados are notorious for staying on the ground"

Damn. Same thing happened here (Clear Channel also). My favorite station, 92.3 KSJO, after 36 years, was turned into a spanish station, playing nothing but mexican music. They were the only station that played Metallica, Ozzy, AC/DC, Zep, and other real rock. They had a HUGE amount of listeners, and lots of people are really pissed off about it.

Supposedly, no one at the station knew it was getting shut down. Even the DJ that was on the radio at the time had no clue when it automatically switched over at 7pm 2 weeks ago.

Of course all the other rock stations are making fun of the whole thing. There's an alternative rock station that's playing tribute to KSJO with a "Mullet Madness" where they're going to play hard rock after midnight on certain nights.

Posted by: BlownElCamino

That is EXACTLY what happened here.

Well, I guess now we can suspect it is a nationwide ClearChannel corporate movement.

I guess if it hasn't happened in your town.... get ready!

Posted by: Slow Nova

Sounds like the CEO might be a spanish-speaking person that hates hard rock & metal?

At least something good came out of this. I had to fill a void in my radio pre-sets, so I was scanning through all the stations available here, and I came across one playing Primus! Any station that plays Primus is definitely a keeper!

Speaking of Primus....I figured it was about time for a new Avatar.

Posted by: BlownElCamino

You will NEVER hear Primus in Houston. Our radio has been too dismal for too long.

Exactually, Hispanics are hugely into Rock N Roll. San Antonio is of course overwhelmingly Spanish and they have KISS FM. Everytime I roll through there I divide the trip into "Within KISS Range" and "Beyond KISS Range."

The request line is always about a bunch of people with heavy Spanish accents calling in and requesting Pantera.

I speak fair (but not great) Spanish and over the years have met many Hispanics here in Houston that have better collections than mine. You can certainly see how true this is any time you go to a rock show in Houston.

Posted by: BlownElCamino

For those of you in a position similar to ours in Houston, here is the KISS URL:

http://kissrocks.com/

Check out their live stream.

Go to "Last Songs Played" if you want to know what these cats are doing.

NOTE: Not a single fucking Aerosmith song.

Posted by: Slow Nova

This is pretty much all we've got left in the Bay Area for rock:

Posted by: BlownElCamino

Not great....but not as bad as we have it (or even had it before 101 went down)

I see they played Floyd's "One of These Days."

Here all we hear of Floyd is "Another Brick in the Wall, Part II"

I guess the grass is always greener......

Posted by: skeezix

Pink Floyd rocks!

They even play some songs from the "Animals" album here on Q-104.

We've got a classic rock station that plays a TON of Floyd songs. They probably play "Money", "Time", "Brain Damage", "Eclipse", "Thin Ice", "Comfortably Numb", and "Welcome to the Machine" twice a day, EACH. Yeah, they play other bands, too.

[edit]
How the hell did we get on this topic, again?

Posted by: BlownElCamino

The Canadian did it.

Actually, I always dug Eric Burdon. I would love to get my hands on a version he did of Tobacco Road that I heard some years ago. I heard it on the radio one time before the advent of Clear Channel effectively erased such non-playlist events. Someone I knew had a bootleg LP (that's one of those round vinyl things) that had that version on it. I haven't heard it since.

damn, KISS rocks! around here our "rock" stations play all the same crappy new ones as them. But, it looks like they still play some REAL metal too. None of em around here will do that. If you're lucky they might play "one" by metallica at 3am but thats it.

I usually liten to the classic rock station at work. They do play some good old songs, but most of em still suck. Besides that they never change up the tunes. Its always the same few songs from the same bands. They play maybe 5 songs from each band and never change the 5 songs!

However, there ARE the only staion that occasionally plays some GnR!

See what I mean?

I know we have a lot of rockers around here....

Anyone who hasn't checked out KISS FM needs to. They may be one of the last ass-kicking bastions.

Hey BlownElCamino, If you can pick up the signal there is an Alvin station thats suposed to be pretty good, 89.7 I havent realy listend to them because I just heard about it yesterday, but I turned it on for a few seconds and they were playing a TOOL song. It may be a keeper.

Posted by: BlownElCamino

I live in Spring so I can't get it here (not unless I put up a really tall antenna). However, on the weekends I do ride at a stable on the South Side and I can pick it up there. In fact, I was in Alvin last Sunday.

You're right, I just wish we had something decent city wide. The argument I keep hearing is that Rock is dying and everyone wants hip-hop. Given the how massive and unsupported the underground rock scene in Houston has ALWAYS been and the number of people (of all ages) I still see at rock shows in the venues around town, it sound likes bullshit to me.

I think last night I realized the agenda and historical parallel. In the 30s and 40s we still had many streetcars and interurbans in our ciites. Some were poorly built and needed to go away, but many others (i.e. California Electric, Galveston-Houston Electric, etc.) What happened? Many of them were bought by tire, bus, and auto manufacturers. After purchase, the new owners deferred maintenace and cut service. Once the lines deteriorated and drove customers away, companies like Goodyear (that owned Pacific Electric) provided for themselves an excuse to eliminate competing technology. Claiming unviability, transit lines were scrapped. Like I said, some of these lines needed to go, but many larger operations were profitable until purchased by concerned linking with the auto industry. This is not conspiracy theorist nonsense, but well documented.

Sound familiar? 101, after the take over, saw a precipitous decline in the quality of programming. Live broadcasting was replaced by pre-recorded programs and automatic playlist sequences. I suspect the song rotations were made purposefully bad in order to drive away listeners and lower ratings (it worked for me). Once this was accomplished, it was very easy to use the low ratings as an excuse to chanege the format, as in, "we change because that format was low perfomring anyway." I suspect (but cannot prove) that the licensing and royalties for the music now broadcast is probably cheaper than Rock N Roll which has a more intrenched legal and management network. Broadcastign hip-hop may be more profitable not because of popularity but because of proft margin.

I can't prove it, but it sure smells the same.

Posted by: MikeT

fuck the radio. Between MP3's and sattilite radio who needs broadcast?

Posted by: BlownElCamino

Agreed. My Current MP3 Player Playlist (workout stuff):

Black Sabbath
Korn
Motorhead
Metallica
Kid Rock (Jackson, MS - Love it!)
Pantera
Prong
White Zombie

My full throttle mix! I can't get it on the radio, so I got to make my own, like everyone else.

Earlier today, I was listening to the Doobie Bros. while working. You never hear this stuff on the radio anymore, either.

Yeah, Fuck Radio
