Hope you have a great time. Don't bet on the Chiefs though......damn they're stinking up the NFL, although they do manage to beat only the best teams and lose only to the worst.

I live in "north central" Florida and the drive to Pensacola is roughly 6 hours if I go 80mph! I takes me about 1.5hours to get to I-10 and nearly 4 more to get to Panama City! Pensacola is further west than P.C.

It's not CA by any means, but the drive is somewhat arduous just the same.

Hey, if you've never done it, think about slipping over the border to see the USS Alabama(BB60) and USS Drun(SS 228) in Mobile Bay. It's CHEAP for active duty or vets(free when I went, $10 at most for anyone) and you get to walk through the ship. You could show THE BOY what the NAVY was like in YOUR time! It's not too far from Pensacola either. Just a thought, depending on how many hours you'll be around. It's like 30 miles into Alabama.

They also have a fairly large display of aircraft and other military equipment, much of it from WWII and all from then till Desert Storm. They even have(and you may not wanna see it) a Vietnam PBR Gun Boat. If you don't have time, it's something to think about in the future if you're interested.

Thanks GRAPE,

I was on the USS New Jersey BB-62 (tdy) in November 1969, Bremerton, Washington. I've also been on the USS Missouri in Hawaii. Been on a couple SUBS also. NOW, the PBR that's another story. Really, have NO desire to see or go on one of those again. The last time was enough. Brings back to many BAD memory's.

We have March AFB museum to see all the Airplanes...........

Besides, I'm only going to be in Pensacola for the day (arriving at 2:30 p.m. and leaving the next morning at 10:00 a.m.) driving back to Cali

I know, not much of a STAY......... the BOY is a BIG Kansas City fan and wants me to watch the game with him and his buddies ( somebody has to BUY ).

The drive's not so bad. I've driven from Port St. Lucie (Near WPB), Florida to San Jose, back to PSL, and back to SJ. 3100 miles each way. The SJ to PSL trip took only 47.5 hours. The others took 3 and 4 days.

The worst part was driving through the Mohave in the middle of July at noon...and the A/C just HAD to crap out on me. Talk about HOT. I don't remember exactly how hot, but it was close to 120º.

Crap! That a LONG way from here! A few hundred miles I'd say! Why don't you come down to central Florida sometime? Several of us live there.

If you happan to go across Texas on 20, stop in Abilene and give us a shout. I'll give you the nickle tour of this weed patch. I might even let you meet Mrs. Merc... :jeepgirl:

ONLY, a few hundred miles SHIT BOY, I thought for a FREE beer you would drive that far

I coming back to Florida in December. I'll be in Ft. Lauderdale on Christmas day. Taking another cruise. 14 days through the Panama Canal and ending up in San Diego. Maybe we can get together then.

I'm guessing Ft Lauderdale is about 200 miles from here. Come down to Orlando sometime and we'll meet up! I think that's a good meeting point for a bunch of us.

We are taking 10 all the way across from Pensacola to Cali. The 10 freeway here is about 3 miles from me.

If that is close, let me know.

While most others may not, I surely know where PSL is, as I used to live in WPB. About 30 miles north and you're there... Well, after you go about 7 miles east of I-95, that is! One of my siusters used to live in PSL. She now lives in Tallahassee and doesn't mind it. Personally, I don't wish to live in either city. At least TAL gets cool at times.

That drive in the heat is what people complain about, even with a working A/C. At least it's not so humid!!!

I-10 in Texas is about a 3.5 hour drive from I-20 in Abilene, although the two converge east of El Paso. Instead, if you have the time, I suggest a slightly different route.

If I am going through W. Texas, I like to take a left at San Antonio and take HWY. 90 west through Del Rio and out to Big Bend. On the way you can see:

Bracketville / Fort Clark
You can actually stay the night in the old fort. The spring fed creek flows through a huge swimming pool on the property (it's still warm enough here). George C. Marshall, Wainright, Ranald Mackenzie, and Patton all served here.

The Alamo Village, the set John Wayne built for the movie is 30 min west of the fort.

Del Rio / Ciudad Acuna
The Mexican side is ciudad Acuna. All you need to cross is your driver's license (walk or get a taxi- DO NOT DRIVE). The main drag in Acuna is where the movie "Desperado" was filmed. You'll see a lot of the buildings from the movie. The bars aren't bad, by Mexican standards.

Keywords: Zona Rosa, Boystown, Donkey Show (just kidding)

There is a parking lot next to the international bridge. Howard Johnson's La Siesta on Hwy 90 serves guests a free COOKED BREAKFAST TO ORDER!!!

Langtry:Judge Roy Bean Country. You can see his court room / saloon.

3.5 hours further west of here you can either stay on 90 and rejoin I-10 after you pass through Marfa, or turn south in Marathon to:

Big Bend National Park

which is probably the best thing in Texas. I could go on for hours about this place.

Go down through Lajitas and take the river road (Texas 170) out to Presidio / Ojinaga. The river road runs through the Rio Grande Canyons. In many places you have 1000' cliffs on both sides of the river (and you). There are 15% grades in places and loose livestock. Although it is paved and well maintained, night driving requires caution.

On the way you will pass the mining ghost towns of Study Butte, Terlingua (of Chili Cook Off fame), and north of Presidio, Shafter.

In Presidio, take hwy 87 north through Shafter and you will rejoin hwy 90 in Marfa (home of the famous Marfa Lights- the Texas version of Area 51).

That's a lot stuff, I know, but if you have time it will beat the hell out of I-10 and its endless windmills.

Hey BlownElCamino,

Thanks for all the info.

I will be a little tight on time. One of the reasons I'm going to Pensacola in the first place is so the BOY can be home for Thanksgiving( orders from the BOSS, go get the BOY and bring him home ).

He graduates from school on Tuesday morning about 11:30 a.m. Hopefully, we can leave around NOON . Then we need to HAUL ASS across the country. I want to be home Wednesday night. Thanksgiving is a BIG day around our house. Alot of people show up to watch the games and PARTY...........

Oh Well, maybe some other time.

If you ever do get the chance, West Texas shouldn't be missed!

It can be done. Just don't plan on stopping for anything but gas.
