Should I change browsers?

Feel free to move this thread if it needs moved!

I'm so used to IE it's natural to use it. However, my pc gained an unruly virus(Spyware) recently and I couldn't whip it no matter what I did. I was told to delete IE and reload it. Problem: I don't have any other choice on my system. After a few weeks of unsuccessfully trying to remove this stinkin' virus, I dumped my ENTIRE system and started over, rebooting my original W-98.

Problem added, my 1999 model Efficient Networks SpeedStream 3060/4060 wasn't working properly, and wouldn't fully load any pages I tried. With that, I called for help and was "conned into" upgrading to a new Westell external modem. All done, it wouldn't go online properly. Again I called and was quickly walked through the connection. Once I logged off, it wouldn't go back online no matter what I tried. One more call and all is well. Seems they forgot 1 step to complete my login process.

And to the end... It was suggested I download FireFox or some other browser instead of IE. The rep told me he just got FF and likes it. He mentioned another I don't remember now, but told me BOTH are better for regular web browsing(his opinion) than IE. So what do you guys think? Should I try something new? As for IE, again I'm used to it, but more importantly, it still WORKS at this point. I'm running my XP again and things are going very well for a change. All info loads, and loads quickly. I do have ADSL and will be on a 3.0Kbps as soon as the system is completed for my area. Right now it's set at 1.3 regularly. Either way, this puppy is QUICK even on an old PIII with only a 20 gig HD.

Don't mean to completely hijack the thread Mike, but this seems to be a great place to discuss the pro's and cons with some of you guys who know more about PC's than I. Sadly, after college, I got all but completely away from computer stuff and just can't decide what to do with my setup anymore.

I use Netscape, but my wife uses IE.

I actually like Netscape!

I just switched to firefox this morning. I decided finally that wanting a browser to work without just sitting there when I clicked links wasn't too much to ask. I like it thus far.

Mozilla Firefox.

FF seems slower to me, so i stuck with IE

I'm a computer specialist and don't believe there is even a real choice of browser other then IE.

How does IE do on that popup test?

Firefox does great.

I switched to mozilla a few months back. I like it much better than IE. The only problem is there are a few sites that ONLY work with IE.

I use IE with Googles Toolbar. It has blocked over 1300 popups since I started using it. It has a Google Search and also will fill out forms for you.

Grape, if its something like Ezula, the only way to get it out completely, is to remove it's parts in the registry, so it will quit recreating itself.

Have you tried Spybot Search & Destroy?

I'll second that and add "HiJAck This."

A few things get by these two, but they will identified so you can at least go fight them manually.

I also like AntiVir. It's freeware, constantly updated, and for whatever it doesn't delete, it will generate report showing the path and location of the trash you want to get rid of. Go here:

Welp, I've got things up and running, but had to reboot my modem this morning for some reason. Anyway, IE is working, popups are non-existent right now. I've used McAfee products for some time now and found that my virus was spyware(it told me that) but couldn't remove it. After a complete system reboot and re-configuration of all my "stuff" things are going well. My only issue now will be getting this Westell modem to cooperate as it's designed. Right now it's great. Yesterday was fine too, but while I was sleeping... Something was D/L'd and caused a problem. I've already got that squared away and hope to avoid this issue in the future.

This new DSL is FAST!!! I'm not even sure if it's the new modem or if they've gotten "3.0" working. Either way, it's every bit as quick as when I first got ADSL in the year 2000. I can now surf till I'm tired again!

Thanks for the suggestions guys. If things head south with this setup anytime soon, I'll be able to read this again and decide easier on making changes. I'm still considering Firefox.
