ps, I need a 30 round clip for the mini 30 anybody have one they want to sell?

I love the 7.62 x 39 round! Almost as cheap as shooting a .22 but much more fun. You can't argue with a box of 50 for $6.99

However, I hate the high-capacity magazine conversion on the SKS. Mine takes about 5 hands to change the clip. My SKS is a great straight shooter (especially since I bought it for $75 before the shadow of THE BAN cast its pall over the land). I love firing it, but the banana clip is more trouble than it is worth. One of these days, I'm going to get the parts to put the stripper clip back in.

Yo, OLE MAN. Head on over to www.aimsurplus.com or www.ammoman.com and buy a couple of cases of ammo (you'll need it.)

Also, before firing the SKS I suggest you read the articles here about it.
http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/carbine/index.asp

also make sure you clean the bolt throughly, best to dissasemble it. The firing pin is freefloating (no spring) and if its caked up w/ cosmoline its possible to slamfire.

Also, I would reccomend leaving the 30rounders out. Most don't feed well, also they are a PITA to change. Keep the 10 rounder, and buy some stripperclips. With a little practice you can reload much faster than changing a mag.

Once you get the hang of it we'll get into doing a trigger job. I've done 3 for far and all turned out quite well.

Have fun w/ your SKS, they are one of the cheapest yet most fun to shoot rifles ever.

Ole Man, get a case of the Russian hollowpoints, or even some domestic lead nosed hunting rounds, because those are great cat loads.

Mike is dead on about the slam-firing. One day I took mine out after having been lazy about cleaning the last time through. The damn thing was firing off 3 and 4 round bursts. It sounded cool, but it was not exactly a comfortable situation.

You have be very carfeul about that as well as checking the receiver condition and your ammo choice.

Firing bursts in the "spray and pray" manner may be fun, and it may clear out the cats hanging around the trash can, but firing for percision is always more fun. "One shot, one score" is always rewarding.

As kid I honed my ability to drop a lead projectile onto a distant target by ground hog hunting in NW Pennsylvaina. I would do it alone, and sometimes with a bud. One day I shot a groundhog that was so far away, nobody else could even see the darn little thing out there in the clover.

I would scan the green and pick up a little brown object. I would select a spot where I could set up my tripod fixed Mossberg bolt action .22 repeater (New Haven Model) with Weaver tipoff scope and still see the "object". Then I would lob one in. Sometimes I had to shoot 6" or more above the target, depending on the distance, and it was always such a hoot to see the "object" roll over. Man, talk about precision shooting!

Then I graduated up to higher speed ammo, heh heh, and more challenging targets.

Guys, whatever you do, PALEEEZE don't embarass yourself on the dove range or in a duck blind with an automatic shotgun. For crying out loud, if you can't hit em with a good over-under or side-by-side double, you need to stay home.

Nice link. The SKS was designed so a native in a hut could figure it out. Pretty simple concept. The AK is even more beautiful in simplicity.

Yeah, despite the sometimes onerous nature of the trigger mechanism, I do like the fact that you can strip one in about 30 seconds even if you have lost both thumbs.

Hey OLE MAN another note, its best to stick with military ammo, or the commerical stuff from russia. The primers are harder wich is designed to work with the freefloating firing pin.

The stuff made stateside generally has softer primers and can somtimes slamfire even if the gun is clean.

Of course for about $9 you can buy a firing pin with a spring on it.

The sks trigger usually sucks out of the box but can be made decent with a little work. It is afterall a weapon of war not a target rifle.

that said, its fast becoming my favorite rifle.
