Default (((flamesuit on))) Thinking about trading the Jeep off.....

Yeah, that's right.......I'm thinkin about tradin off the ol' Jeep for.................... Another Jeep!

Yeah, that's right, another Jeep.

I'm looking at a '97 Grand Cherokee Limited.

4x4 (full time t-case.....NP249)
318
leather
power seats, moonroof, mirrors, windows, locks.........
tow package
etc.

Anybody had one of these?

How reliable are 318's?

What do you think it'll do for gas mileage? I've only been getting about 17mpg in my Cherokee (hence my signature).

I'm thinking it would put me a step ahead especially because of the tow package. I've been thinking about trying to find a trailer for work (construction) but my Cherokee doesn't have any sort of hitch or trans cooler.

The Grand is priced at $8995, I'm assuming I could probably pull it out of there for 8000 with them paying mine off. Think it's a decent deal?

Gimme some feedback......I live out in the country with rough roads so the winter will be interesting if we get much snow. My Cherokee will cut through a foot of snow pretty easily, I assume the Grand would go through just as much. I also need 4 wheel drive to pull my boss's '99 Chevy 3500 4 door 8ft bed out of whatever he gets himself stuck in from time to time. Right now I'm stuck hooking the strap to the axle because the Cherokee has no tow points.

what is the old saying about the difference between a fool and a wiseman?

IMO jeeps are junk unless you want a trail vehicle. That said your cherokee is a much better 4x4 than the grand cherokee is.

Gas mileage will probibly be about the same.

If I was in your shoes I wouldn't do it.

318's are supposed to be reliable. The one I had was a peice of crap. It was in a '86 Chrysler 5th Ave.

What makes the XJ (Cherokee) better than the ZJ (Grand Cherokee)? The XJ suspension SUCKS for the road (my rear leaves are backbowed at 128k miles now). The ZJ can tow 1500lbs more (well, infinitely more right now, because my XJ doesn't have a hitch). Front doesn't sag because it's coils. ZJ has coils on all 4 corners. Overall, just sitting in the ZJ, you can tell it's a more solid vehicle than my Cherokee. Is that because the ZJ is a Limited and my XJ is just a Sport with manual windows and locks? Maybe, hard to tell.

That said, I'm leaning toward not trading right now. My payment would go up about $60 a month, then my insurance would go up too (not sure how much). I'd most likely be better off with a truck anyway, so if I'm going to finance 8 grand, it'll probably be for a truck. Then again, who knows. It's hard to say.

Thanks for the input.

Deck, the XJ has a solid axle up front. Also, if I remeber correctly some of the xj's rear axles had an aluminum center section which was weak. I don't know about the ones with the towing package though.

I'm just going on memory here, which is a bit cloudy.

ZJ is solid front too, even on the new ones. The only IFS Jeep is the KJ (Liberty).

As for the aluminum, I think most of the ZJ's got an aluminum Dana 44. It wouldn't be bad unless you were going to really wheel it and drop it on rocks and stuff. To hold up to power, it should still be stronger than my Chrysler 8.25" rear. If you're going to rockcrawl, it wouldn't be a good idea to go aluminum.......

Still don't think I'm going to go for the ZJ though....I don't want to raise my payment $60 a month and pay 3 1/2 years longer than what I've got left to pay on mine for a marginally better vehicle.

However........I'm not thinking about trying to get a minivan (2.5 turbo Caravan) to replace the ol' Celica for my mileage getter.............................hehehehhhhhhhhhh..................
